CHROMagar Staph.aureus

CHROMagar Staph.aureus a chromogenic media, for isolation of specimens, allowing direct differenciation of Staphylococcus aureus by colony colour.

Using CHROMagar Staph.aureus, a specific chromogenic medium for Staphylococcus aureus and with procedures identical to those used in classical culture methods : either prepare CHROMagar Staph.aureus petri plates according to instructions, innoculate and incubate at 37ºC for 24 hours; or incorporate 1ml of food sample into 10ml of melted CHROMagar Staph.aureus medium and incubate at 37ºC for 24 hours.

Rapid and reliable detection of Staphylococcus aureus. Easily distinguishable colonies due to the purple colouring they have aquired. Other bacterial species are inhibited or give blue and colourless colonies. The purple colonies of Staphylococcus aureus thus detected can be studied directly by serotyping and biochemical strip tests for confirmation and epidemiological follow up.

Results are readable under normal lighting.

For study of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, appropriate antibiotics such as tobramycin, ofloxacin or oxacillin can be added in the medium.

  • Staphylococcus aureus - purple
  • other bacterial colonies - inhibited, blue or colourless
